What are good baking and snacking apples?
The Red Delicious apple, with its rich red color, is probably the most well-known of the eating apples. It has a mealy texture and a sweet flavor with hardly a hint of tartness. It’s a great snacking apple but doesn’t hold up as a cooking apple because of its texture. Fujis are also great apples for snacking. When you bite into one it’s like a waterfall of flavor popping out of your mouth. Another good eating apple is the Jonathan, but wait until they come in locally. They’re best when in season. Macoon apples are my favorite and they also start in October. Macoon is like prime rib, when a lot of other apples are like cheap cuts of beef. The best kind of cooking apple is the Granny Smith. It’s crunchy and tart and holds its shape well. The Rome apple is a baking apple, Cameo apples, too. There are just so many to talk about. The list goes on and on.
