What are goats?
Bovidae: Caprinae: Caprini: genus Capra – goats A ruminant (chews cud) with a 4 chambered stomach, cloven hooves – some with beards some with no beards, some with horns and some without (polled). Both male and female goats can have beards and/or horns. A male goat is referred to as a buck or billy and a female goat is referred to as a doe or nanny. Baby Goats are known as kids. Castrated male goats are known as wethers. Gestation for a female goat is approximately 145-155 days. Breeding season is typically between the months of late July to late February. During breeding season male goats go into “rut” where they emit a perfume from behind their horns and behind their front legs to intice the female goats to breed with them. Goats can give birth to 1,2,3,4 or sometimes 5 kids in a season (Known as a kidding season) .
