Gerbils make fantastic pets. They’re very docile, and social. Since they’re social, they should be kept in same sex pairs. Gerbils are very entertaining, and unlike hamsters, they’re not nocturnal. They’re awake throughout the day and night. Gerbils are desert animals, which means they produce less urine. Less urine = less smell. All animals will have some type of odor, but gerbils don’t smell unless you really put your nose on their fur to take a whiff. I can go a month without changing the bedding for my gerbils, because it just doesn’t smell. Gerbils are messy, depending on what their housing is. The best housing for gerbils would be a tank, with a secure wire mesh lid. Gerbils love digging, and a tank lets you add more bedding. You’ll find that if you house gerbils in a wire cage, they WILL fling bedding everywhere and you WILL be vacuuming every day.
