What are extraction and non-extraction therapy, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Extraction therapy is a technique where some permanent teeth are removed to make room for the other teeth in your child’s mouth. This is in contrast to non-extraction therapy where one expands a patient’s jaw and shaves down some teeth to make everything fit. Years ago, everyone got extraction therapy. Now, most orthodontists use non-extraction therapy with most adolescent patients. Instead, a gadget called a palatal expander is used to expand the adolescent’s jaw. Adult patients are still treated via extraction therapy however, because once someone stops growing, it takes major surgery to expand someone’s jaw.
Extraction therapy is a technique where some teeth are removed to make room for the other teeth in your child’s mouth. This is in contrast to non-extraction therapy where one expands a patients’ jaw and re-contour some teeth in order to make everything fit. Dr. Maulik will discuss all options at the treatment plan visit.
Extraction therapy is a technique in which some teeth are removed in order to make room for the other, adjacent teeth. Though no one really enjoys the prospect of having teeth removed, in some cases, this is unavoidable and very necessary. Commonly, the teeth that are removed are several “bicuspid” teeth (since these come in “pairs” anyway, i.e., if you take one bicuspid, you usually have another bicuspid next to it). Occasionally, because of badly broken down molars, or an unusual pattern of missing teeth, other teeth may be the preferred choice of extraction.
Extraction and non-extraction therapy make room for other teeth. Extraction therapy is a technique where some teeth are removed to make room other teeth. This is in contrast to non-extraction therapy where it expands a patients’ jaw and/or shave some teeth to reduce the width to make everything fit properly. We will make a thorough evaluation at the consultation appointment and discuss which options are best suited for you.
