What are extended benefits, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation 08 (EUC) program and the Recovery and Reinvestment Act?
• Extended benefits are additional unemployment insurance (UI) benefits that are available to unemployed workers when they have exhausted their regular UI benefits. Extended benefits programs are created during periods of high unemployment. • The EUC08 emergency UI benefits program is a federally-funded program providing much needed help for many Kansans and their families while they continue to look for work. Effective July 6, 2008, the President approved up to 13 weeks of EUC08 benefits to unemployed workers. On November 21, 2008, an extension was signed into law, adding up to seven additional weeks of additional benefits for Kansas workers. This brings the total maximum EUC08 benefit to 20 weeks in Kansas. • The federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act extends the deadline to file for and collect EUC benefits. Originally, the program was to expire on March 31, 2009. The new law allows applications for EUC to be filed through the week ending December 26, 2009.
