What are Executive Function Skills?
Executive Function Skills (EFS) is a term used by educators, mental health professionals and neuroscientists to describe brain processes that give order and organization to our actions and behaviors. It is a related but overlapping set of skills that may be stronger in one person than another. A student may simply have some areas of weak executive function skills but not be classified as having a disability. Consider a student who needs extra help in geometry. This student does not have a disability, but receives tutoring to improve his understanding and receive better grades. Other students may have a diagnosis of NVLD, Aspergers or ADD/HD.
