What are examples of academic writing situations?
Whenever we are asked to write something in an academic situation, we are given clues or key words or command words that tell us what the instructor expects the structure of our writing to look like. These include words such as compare, analyze, outline, define, argue, describe, and so on. The first thing to understand about these words is that they demand writings that are structured differently. They each have a different set of generic FAQs. In other words, a definition will look different from an argument. The good news is that such things as definition and argument may be used in a number of disciplines. You may apply what you know about defining, for example, to writing in psychology, history, English, sociology, speech, and any other discipline that expects you to write.
