What are educational exceptions in the current copyright act?
Current exceptions to the Canada Copyright Act include a general ‘fair dealing’ exception for research or private study as well as more specific exceptions for educational institutions. A not-for-profit educational institution can copy texts and perform musical and theatrical works in the classroom as long as they are for educational and training purposes. Educational institutions can make recordings of news and commentary programs from television or radio, but not documentary material, and can keep these recordings for one year.
