Ecosystem services are services that humans extract or obtain from ecosystems, such as food and water. Ecosystem services are often thought of as belonging to one of four categories: • Provisioning services, such as food, fresh water, fuel and wood. • Regulating services, such as climate regulation, flood regulation, disease regulation and water purification. • Cultural services, such as the recreational or religious value of ecosystems. • Supporting services, such as soil formation and photosynthesis.
