It should be known that without algae the organisms in the ocean would die. According to one expert, algae are to fishes and other aquatic animals as grass is to horses, cows, and giraffes. Too much algae, on the other hand, could end up harming the organisms in an aquatic ecosystem. There are two main types of algae: microscopic algae, also called phytoplankton, and macroscopic algae, which is easily seen by the naked eye and can easily be picked up by humans swimming in the water. The Northwest Fisheries Science Center writes that phytoplankton are single-celled marine algae that range in size from microscopic to 2 mm (millimeters) long.
