What are double bridles used for?
It is a more prcise control of the position of the horses head – mostly used in dressage and showing. The snaffle bit works on the corners, bars and tongue in the mouth and the overall effect is raising of the head, relaxing the lower jaw and drawing the nose in. The curb bit has a lever action which works on the poll and the chin groove and encourages the horse to lower his head and engage his hindquarters. It should always be used with 2 reins. The dressage horses I used to work with (Grand Prix) were all trained in snaffles and only ridden in a double immediately before and during a competition. So they should not be a quick fix instead of appropriate training!!!
