Different types of fasteners are nuts and bolts or screws. Nuts and bolts join two or more items together using threads on the nuts and bolts that match and have the ability to tighten. Nuts and bolts use washers and lock washers to give strength to the area being compressed. A lock washer keeps the nut from loosening and coming off the bolt. Nuts and bolts come in all sizes shapes and styles for many different applications. Screws are also a fastener but do not require a nut. Screws have threads that when turned bite into the items being connected. Screws are typically used with softer items (wood, plastic and aluminum etc.) where nuts and Bolts can develop more strength and pressure. Fasteners can be made of almost any material. Typical fasteners would be made of a metal however if corrosive elements are involved the fastener may be made from stainless steel or even plastic or some other item that is not adversely effected by the corrosive element.
