What Are Dalis Most Notable Pieces Of Art?
Dali’s work spans a vast number of mediums, taking in paintings, illustrations, lithographs, costumes, sculptures and even a cartoon. Dali’s most famous work, however, is entitled The Persistence of Memory, and was painted in 1931. The painting depicts a Catalan sea-scape across which is strewn a number of clocks which seem to be melting. The artist was driven to produce this famous surrealist image after a vision involving cheese ~ resulting in their strange texture. One clock is being eaten by ants, seen by many commentators to be a suggestion that the concept of time is not as unchangeable as many may think. Dali revisited this painting and its theme in 1952 when he painted The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory. In this work the original landscape now floats above water, below which can be seen a series of seemingly infinite blocks, rigid in their arrangement and yet not held together by anything.
