What are Daily Values?

A Daily Value is the specific amount of a nutrient, vitamin, mineral, or other food category recommended by the U.S. government for daily consumption. This varies depending on the number of calories recommended for an individual, which is based on the person’s size, activity level, and other factors. The Daily Values chart at the bottom of the label shows the recommended nutrient amounts for people who should maintain a 2,000- or 2,500-calorie diet. (See “The guidelines for planning a healthy diet” for more information on this.) These are not the amounts contained in the labeled food itself.
