What are current treatments for heart failure?
Conventional therapies used to treat most heart failure patients include medication such as beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, Angiotensin II receptor blockers, aldosterone inhibitors, vasoactive agents and diuretics. Surgery may be recommended when a correctable problem can be identified that is causing heart failure. In these cases, a heart valve may be replaced, a blocked vessel may be opened with angioplasty or bypass surgery, a defibrillator may be implanted for those with serious irregular heartbeats, a left-ventricular assist device may be implanted to help a heart that can’t pump on its own, or a heart transplant may be recommended.
