What are Criminologists Studying, and Who are “Criminologists”?
The development of criminology is associated with China s willingness to integrate itself into the international community. Criminology is viewed as one of the tools with which to modernize Chinese society. It came into existence because social order has to be maintained according to internationally acceptable standards. It is not a reaction to emerging urban social problems. As a result, policy-driven research flourishes both in Taiwan and in China while behavioral-oriented research is lacking. On top of this policy orientation, nationalism on both sides of the Taiwan Straight obscures serious research of criminal behavior as largely universal behavior. Criminology, published in 1932 by Li Jianhua, was the most influential textbook in the early years of Chinese criminological history.
