Here’s a brief history of the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Jewry. Originally, and until the mid 19th century, there were only Orthodox Jews. Then since Germany started actually giving Jews equal rights, arguably more rights then Jews had in the U.S., the Reform movement came into being whose entire purpose was to assimilate into the non-Jewish culture. A well known phrase by early reform Jews was “Berlin is our Jerusalem and Germany is our Zion”. All the grandchildren of the founders of the Reform movement ended up no longer being Jewish. While they backed away from that phrase after the Holocaust, for many their prime goal was still to assimilate. Since their entire structure was falling apart with everyone assimilating, they back tracked a little and formed basically Judaism-light,
