What are Cohesive Implants?

0

The standard implant in the United States since 1992 has been the saline-filled implant. The FDA placed a moratorium on silicone implants due to safety concerns. However, cohesive implants have been available outside the United States for the past 10 years. They have not yet been approved by the FDA. They are available only in the course of clinical trials in the United States. Cohesive implants are different from silicone implants in that cohesive implants contain a thicker gel. They have been called “gummy bear implants” due to the consistency of the gel they contain. This gel allows the implants to keep their shape. They are not affected by gravity and movement. They are also less likely to leak than are traditional implants. If cut in half, cohesive implants are still able to maintain their shape.
