What are CLAs concerns about copyright legislation?
In the letter from the Canadian Library Association (CLA) regarding copyright the CLA expresses four concerns with the previous attempts to amend the Copyright Act: • Libraries ensure access to information for all Canadians and as such should not be treated like any other business in any amendment to the Copyright Act; instead they should be regarded as separate entities • CLA supports technological protection measures (TPMs) but is concerned about amendments restricting users rights to get around TPMs by creating extra “complexity, significant expense or hardship” • Privacy rights must be protected • New amendments should take into account recent Supreme Court of Canada rulings on “fair dealing”
