What are cellulosic biofuels and second-generation biofuels?
Cellulosic biofuels, such as cellulosic ethanol, are the new generation of transportation fuels and are called “second-generation” fuels because they are not produced from sugar and starch crops, such as corn. With advanced technology being developed, materials such as trees, grasses, waste and energy crops can be used as feedstock for ethanol production. Because Enerkem uses waste materials to produce fuels, Enerkem’s activities do not reduce food supply or increase food prices.
