Cuba, a communist state, accepted the USSR’s offer of missiles and protection for fear of an USA invasion. USA had been plotting to overthrow Cuba’s communist leader, Fidel Castro. The USA provided funding and training to exiled Cuban rebels who wanted to overthrow the Castro government. These Cubans tried to invade Cuba in 1961 via Bay of Pigs but failed. Castro was angered by the invasion attempt and hence sought an alliance with the USSR.
