What are Cascading Style Sheets? Should I use them?
This site, like all our sites, is designed with Cascading Style Sheets. They are a great idea whose time has almost come. Initially proposed by The World Wide Web Consortium and first embraced by Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 way back in early ’97, Cascading Style Sheets are a maturing Standard, and an easy-to-use technology that lets site designers specify design elements for their web pages from
to , from to text. Nor are you limited to traditional HTML syntax. You can invent your own classes (“main,” “fine print”) and use them at will. A concrete example will make this all much more clear. Let’s look at a Style Sheet. Here’s a typical embedded stylesheet – the kind you would use to design a single page, rather than an entire site. It’s called an EMBEDDED stylesheet because it gets written (“embedded”) in the of an html document. Here is the code:
