What are Cascading Style Sheets, Really?
Forget the “cascading” part for the moment; again, it sounds intimidating, but when explained in simple terms, it’s no big deal at all. It’s so simple that you’ll laugh, because the term “cascading” is actually rather poetic. The “style sheet” part is easy if you know about style sheets in word processors such as Microsoft Word. The purpose of a style sheet is to specify properties for the text elements in your document to give all of your text elements a consistent look (level 1 headings always have the same font, size, and color; level 2 heading always have the same font, size, and color; and so on). Furthermore, style sheets lead to much better designs than you could possibly achieve by individually hand-coding the properties of each and every element in your documents.
