What are bit seats, and why are they important to my performance horse?
A bit seat is created by rounding the first set of cheek teeth right where the bit sits when we ask the horse to collect, turn, stop, or do anything that involves contact. A bit seat ensures that the horse cannot get its cheek caught in between the bit and his teeth. Thus the horse cannot chew its cheek or the bit and this gives the rider more control. Thus the horse’s performance is radically improved both at home and in competition.
Bit seats are the rounded rostral portion of the first cheek teeth that the bit comes in contact with, such as when we ask a horse to stop, turn, or collect. The bit seats ensure that tissue from the corner of the mouth simply rolls off and is not pinched by the bit and does not allow the horse to chew on his on cheek when the rider applies contact. This way the horse is as comfortable as possible and maximum control is obtained. This can drastically improve the horse’s performance at home and in the show ring.
