The idea of a Best Practices Database is based on the observation that carefully documented case histories can provide excellent guidelines for policy making and planning of new projects. The goal of a database on Best Practices is to present and promote creative, successful and sustainable solutions to social problems arising from poverty and social exclusion in order to build a bridge between empirical solutions, research and policy. Best Practices, in the MOST Database, are model projects or policies aimed at improving the quality of life of individuals or groups suffering from poverty or social exclusion. They are typically based on the cooperation between national or local authorities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local communities, the private sector, and academic communities. ‘Best practices’ are practices which are intended to make digital language documentation optimally longlasting, accessible, and re-usable by other linguists and speakers. Recommendations of best practices cover all aspects of digitizing and archiving language documentation, including how to record it, annotate it, catalogue it, store it, and display it in such a way as to respect the intellectual property rights of stakeholders. The recommendations on this site have grown out of some of the larger language digitization and language engineering projects. E-MELD has been charged with disseminating these recommendations and encouraging community feedback. Please note: the recommendations on the E-MELD site are intended as suggestions, not directives. No doubt “best practices” mean different things to different people. Here’s our definition. “Best practices” are documented strategies or tactics used successfully by a highly admired person or company. The person or company does not have to be highly successful in every respect. That requirement would be much too difficult to meet. But in the area addressed by the best practices, that person or company should be recognized as one of the best in the business. So all you need to do is identify best practices that apply to your situation and follow them. Right? Not quite! Best practices must be fine tuned for your situation. “Best practice” is a phrase used to identify a documented way of achieving a specific results under specific circumstances in an effective way. It is a concept based on lessons learned by one group that are passed on to other groups. In this way an individual or organization can focus on performance of the task rather than first determining the best way to accomplish the task. This can save both time and money. In addition, the use of best practices can facilitate a more consistent set of results. The wheels of progress would turn much more slowly if every time an organization began a task that they had never done before, they had to use a trial and error method to determine the most efficient way of performing the task. However, by relying on other people and/or organizations’ trials and errors that have evolved into a method that has been proven to be the most efficient, they can begin the task using a proven method.
