What are barium studies? How are they done?
Barium studies include barium swallow (for oesophagus), meal (for stomach), meal-follow-through (for small bowel), enema (for large bowel). In barium swallow, meal and meal-follow-through, patient has to drink barium mixed in water. In barium enema, barium is injected using enema tube. Barium opacifies the gut and helps in its visualization on X-Ray films taken thereafter.
