What are bad effects on using nipple shields?
Ah, yes, midwives hate these and they wouldn’t countenance me using them. But for me, they were only positive. I was engorged and at the beginning had to express for every feed. This had the effect of making my milk flow too fast and my son was choking on all the milk coming out. I read Clare Byam-Cook’s book on “What to expect when you’re breastfeeding” which said that you *should* use nipple shields in this situation because otherwise your baby would be freaked out by fast flow and might be scared off the breast altogether. So, against all other health professionals’ advice, I tried them. They were like magic – my son had a lovely long, non-screaming feed and settled down for a sleep in my arms. I was converted! Allegedly they’re only for short-term use, but I used them for 9 months until I had to stop breastfeeding. Allegedly they reduce milk flow but that certainly wasn’t the case for me.
