What are asylum seekers?
Asylum seekers are individuals who are illegal immigrants seeking to reside legally in another country, oftentimes the U.S., who are claiming that they will suffer serious injury or death if forced to return to their homeland. As such, they seek asylum in the U.S. to, in essence, protect them from what they would face if they returned to their native country. Typically, asylum is sought by individuals who come from politically and/or war-torn countries with different factions.
