What are Associates?

Each college has faculty, staff, and community associates. There are approximately 20 faculty associates representing a variety of academic fields. Some faculty associates are also divisional advisors. Faculty associates participate in O-Week through the academic advising process. In addition, faculty associates attend lunches and other events at the college throughout the year and are a valuable source of advice for course planning, as well as other issues. Each college also has university associates who are staff or administrators at Rice. Community associates are drawn from the Houston community and are often alumni of the college of which they are associates. Faculty, university, and community associates are involved in a dinner during O-Week (usually hosted at an associate’s home) and various social activities throughout the year.

CompPile Associates will be responsible for journals in her or his scholarly area (we’ve identified 19 “areas” for now, but the boundaries are very fluid). Associates will identify, recruit, and coordinate the work of a group of volunteers, who will update and maintain the indexing for journals in that group’s area. The Associates’ task does not end with the logistical work of recruiting, coordinating the indexing, vetting entries to be sure formating is consistent, and sending them on for uploading into the main CompPile database. They will also review and when necessary create the search terms for each record. This is not a light task, and requires a comprehensive grasp of disciplinary issues and concepts. In short, the CompPile Associates will be colleagues with deep understanding of the scholarship in her or his area.

These are good questions that are frequently not filled in correctly. first of all I review background investigations to make sure all areas are covered correctly-I also used to adjudicate them as to suitability for the nations civil and military service up to Top Secret (which includes the sf86) As to relative/associates with whom the subject has close and continuing relation ship has to do with security concerns because the sf86 is for National Secutiry Positions, while SP85p IS FOR pUblic trust-a little lower on the scale and the SF85=Non-sensitive. the sf86 most likely involves access/control and dissemination of classified info. Now, my common rule would be at the time of applicaiton would some security official want to know about a family member -not listed in other areas of the many relative categories that might pose a concern as to pressure coercion for relaease of info or black mail etc for the same. Same with Associates, rule of thumb is the same but would apply more to room
