What are appropriate expectations for language learning within the FLES and immersion programs?
v Language learning is a long-term process and long-term commitment and support to this process is essential. Developing native-like proficiency with speaking and writing skills is unlikely, however, immersion students will acquire functional proficiency in the immersion language as well as native-like levels of listening and reading comprehension. FLES students will benefit from early and long-term exposure to Spanish and can expect to develop a modest level of functional proficiency over time. v A “silent period” is normal, since understanding language usually precedes producing it.
