What are appropriate clothes to bring?
The Tanzanians take considerable pride over their appearance, and, especially women, dress fairly conservatively. Although many tourists wear short skirts and shorts and spaghetti-strap tops, it is respectful to cover the shoulders and knees, especially when working and living with the locals. Also, while it is acceptable for women to wear pants, Tanzanians more often wear skirts. For volunteers of both genders, it is good to bring clothes that can stand up to getting dusty and dirty in the course of volunteering. Good walking shoes are a must. The weather in Tanzania, and particularly in Arusha can vary greatly over the course of a day, so volunteers should bring plenty of layers.
