An appraisal follows a defined method (SCAMPI) used to provide an accurate picture of the strengths and weaknesses of an organization’s current software, system, and people processes, using a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) as a reference model. The results of an assessment identify process areas for improvement. Process areas are model subsets to enable and understanding and help focus improvement actions for an organization. Appraisals are also used to support, enable, and encourage an organization’s commitment to software, systems, and people process improvement. Appraisals are an integral part of the diagnosing phase of the IDEAL approach to software process improvement.
