Application firewalls analyze the requests at the application level. These firewalls are used for specific applications like a web server or a database server. The web application firewalls protect the web server from HTTP based attacks. They monitor the requests for attacks that involve SQL Injection, XSS, URL encoding etcetera. However, application layer firewalls cannot protect against attacks that require an understanding of the business context – this includes most attacks that rely on variable manipulation.
