What are Aphids?
Aphids or plant lice are small insects that live in colonies. They feed on plant juices causing the plant to become stunted and distorted. They excrete large amounts of honeydew which causes sooty mold to develop. They are only 1/16 to 1/4 of an inch long. They are pear-shaped, white, green, yellow, black or brown. They are very slow moving and have a hornlike processes on the posterior end of the abdomen. Most aphids are female and they reproduce without mating. When a colony becomes overcrowded winged forms appear and fly to the next plant to establish a new colony.
