There are a lot of reasons for the missing persons statistics, particularly in the EU but a lot of these people are missing deliberately. The reasons may be political, but mostly you will find it is because of abuse problems. Sometimes the only way to get out of the problem is to change your name and location and therefore unavoidably be entered on the missing persons list.
