What are allowable construction costs?
Allowable construction costs are the costs of school construction that the state deems allowable for a school district to spend on a school construction project. The state has a formula based on several factors to determine the amount allowable for state aid. The district is not required to limit its spending to this allowable cost. The formula is based on a determined number of square feet per student and a determined dollar amount per square feet (ex. Grades 9-12 = 180 sq. ft. per student & $195 per sq. ft.). There are variations in state aid to allow for renovation vs. new construction and additional amounts for demolition, site work, and waste treatment facilities.
