If you have recently installed XP Service Pack 2 or updated your copy of Windows XP using Automatic Update, the new security settings interfere with many programs that use the Internet. Please see Microsoft’s knowledge base for comprehensive instructions on how to adjust the security settings for individual programs: Some programs seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2. Older versions of Windows with firewalls installed on them (or on a network, e.g. connected wirelessly to a broadband router) can also block Subscription Manager. In this case, we recommend that you turn off any security programs on your PC (or network) for a few moments whilst you install the file, then turn them back on – these programs do not seem to interfere with ordinary subscription downloads. If you are on a dialup account, you may also find it helpful to manually connect to the Internet for the installation, instead of relying on Subscription Manager’s auto-dial. More about the XP fire
