What are all the little icons that show up just to the left of my computer clock?
This area of the Windows Taskbar is called the System Tray (also called the “Notification Area”). All the icons which appear here are programs which start with Windows and are running in the background. Not every program that starts up with Windows or is running in the background will appear here, but many do. The System Tray is expandable. If you click the arrow on the left edge of it, you’ll see all of the icons of programs which place icons in the System Tray and are running in the background. Each of the programs whose icons appear here are using computer resources. You can right-click any of these icons and exit the program they are associated with, but the next time you start your computer they’ll return, unless you prevent them from starting with Windows. Too many icons appearing in the system tray is a pretty good sign that you have too many programs starting with Windows.
