What Are Academic Skills?
Academic Skills (also known as Study Skills) can improve your academic performance and the quality of your work. The Learning Development Unit (LDU) provides guidance in the following areas: • Time Management – planning study and revision time, meeting deadlines comfortably; • Using Resources effectively – in particular, library and information resources (e.g. books, journals, IT and the Internet); • Taught Sessions – preparatory reading and note-taking, participation in lectures and seminars; • Reading – prioritising, reading selectively, skim reading and note-taking; • Writing – learning the conventions for academic essay/report writing; writing drafts and proofreading; • Working Collaboratively – developing organisational, team working and communication skills; • Assessment – examination and coursework preparation.
