What are Aboriginal Targeted Dollars?
Aboriginal Targeted Dollars are funds provided by the BC Ministry of Education for services and programs above and beyond general operating grants based on a student’s “Aboriginalness.” These funds are for culturally relevant programming in addition to any other programs to which the student is entitled. The local Aboriginal community and parents must be involved in the planning and delivery of these programs. Targeted dollars can be spent in three ways: 1. Aboriginal Language and Culture Programs – to enhance the students’ knowledge, understanding and fluency in his or her heritage and/or culture. 2. Aboriginal Support Services Programs – to assist Aboriginal students achieve greater success in school by providing personnel who are familiar with and sensitive to the values, beliefs and needs of the Aboriginal community from which the student comes. 3.
