What are 5 things every aspiring sports writer needs to know before pursuing this profession?
Ryan: Looking back on how my years in sports information have gone, five things I now know that I tell others looking to enter the profession are: be able to detach, be ready for long/strange hours, do you have passion, do you want to learn and be prepared. Although I represent Arizona State and am at numerous events, fans see me and, as I have been asked, Why dont you ever cheer for your team? As an SID, we have to hold back our emotions because not only do we provide coverage of our team, we also work with the media to get them what they need. I always tell my students that if you are there cheering, you are going to miss something and if that something is a big turning point in the game or an important takedown in the match, you might remember it, but you might not remember it in a way that if a media member asks what happened next, which could be vital for their story, you wont know.
