What are 5 sedimentary rock characteristics?
1. Most often composed of particles that are either cemented together or formed by compaction. 2. Typically contain pores, or open spaces between the particles (also called clasts) or grains. 3. Typically have layers, or other types of sorting that consist of groups of differing sizes or types of particles. These layers are most often the result of the sedimentary depositional process that created the rock. 4. Often contain a mixture of types of minerals and rock types within the rock. The mixture can be very homogenous (e.g. a mudstone) or very heterogeneous (e.g. a conglomerate of various rock types). 5. They almost always form as a result of the effect of gravity which causes them to settle and deposit, either from air or water.
