What approach does EWB use for projects overseas?
At first glance, the role of Western engineers in development may appear to be the identification of solutions, followed by a trip overseas to implement them. More often than not, this takes the form of drilling a well, building a school, or installing a new technology developed in western labs. EWB believes that sustainable development requires more than the simple installation of technologies. In order to make the most significant and lasting contribution (with the help of our partners), EWB chooses to focus on building capacity, rather than on the delivery of technological goods. Our volunteers work in partnership with local partner organisations that are already established within the local communities and taking steps to improve access to appropriate technologies. By strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of the partner organisation, EWB is helping them become better at helping communities.
