What and how does a Sea Otters eat?
The main prey of sea otters include: sea urchins, clamd, mussels, octopus, fish, as well as other marine invertebrates. Sea otters will dive to the bottom, to collect their food. They then return the surface to eat on thier back with the food on their chests. The will eat piece by piece and use various tools (like rocks) to crack shells. Sea otters are the only marine mammal to use tools to eat! Feeding is a large portion of a sea otters day, as large quantities of food are required to remain healthy, which puts them in conflict with human commercial interests. 40-50 pounds of whole shelfish is needed each day, resulting in 8-15 pounds of edible food.Diving for food usually takes less than a minute, though some have been seen to stay underwater for 5 minutes or more.What are Sea Otters mating and breeding habits?
