What amount of homework should students expect?

0

Once students enter Yew Chung Internatinal School – Secondary, they need to adopt a more systematic approach of reviewing their work each day. Year 7-9 students should be doing at least 15-20 hours of homework a week. Students in the IGCSE and IB programs, if they want to be successful, should be doing 20-30 hours of homework a week. Discipline learned in doing homework each day will prepare students to perform strongly in the examinations. When students are not doing assigned homework, they must read. A book a week should be the goal.

While some homework is assigned for practicing skills and ideas learned during a school day, homework is designed to be interesting and developmental. The amount assigned varies depending on the age and the class level of the student. Students in Lower Primary classes may be given 40-60 minutes whereas students in the Upper Primary may have 90-105 minutes of homework a day. These times include homework from both Western and Chinese teachers. Students in the Upper Primary are expected to do homework for their main subjects every night but students in the Lower Primary classes have designated days for each subject – except spelling and reading that must be practiced daily. When students are not assigned homework, they are encouraged to read for enjoyment. A book every two to three days should be the goal. Once students enter the Secondary School, they need to adopt a more systematic approach of reviewing their work each day. Years 7-9 students should be doing at least 15-20 hours of home
