What all things can a kid learn from painting e.g. new english words by playing scrabble?
Here is a link to a classic paper by Ellion Eisner about what children learn while they paint. The whole article is not posted, but it’s a great place to start. Some of the things children learn: “Personal Causation” – when I put a pen to a paper, it leaves a mark. Symbolism – they learn that something on paper can stand for something elsewhere in the world. That is a first step toward learning written language. Symbolic Play – You can draw a picture of yourself doing something. This leads to storytelling. It also leads to empathizing, as you draw someone else doing something. Judgment and Rule-making – When you decide what is important to include in an abstraction and what isn’t, you learn to make judgments and create rules. When my son draws a picture of his room using a blue pen, even though none of the things he is drawing are blue, he is deciding that color is not as important as shape in that particular drawing. But when he draws people’s faces and hands, he almost always uses an
