What alcoholic drink is the lowest for calories?
Alcohol is effectively a highly concentrated sugar, and therefore packed with calories. It therefore follows that the higher the alcohol content, the more calories – in other words, if you drink a glass of beer you’ll only get about 1/10th of the alcohol of the same amount of spirits. Of course, to get the same ‘effect’ you would normally drink much more of beer/wine than spirits, so it may be that the alcohol intake is pretty much the same either way. In addition most drinks contain ‘normal’ sugar as well: sweet wine has more than dry wine, liqueur has more than spirits, etc., and if you use regular Coke as a mixer you’ll get plenty more sugar than if you use Diet Coke (although the latter tastes horrible when mixed with spirits!). Contrary to popular belief, however, colourful drinks don’t have to contain more sugar than clear ones (eg. red vs. white wine, brandy vs. vodka, etc.). In conclusion, drink low-ABV drinks, and don’t add sugary mixers.
