First, no Canadian would need to choose a side since the American revolution did not affect their relationship with the English directly. Certainly, they would have had sympathy for the Patriot cause if they opposed English rule but that is not the same as choosing sides. Second, the politics and behavior of citizens of Quebec in the late 1700’s were not the same nor sprung from the same issues as those of today’s Qubecois even though they share some common roots.
