What age to start kindergarten?
Every school district will have a date that the child needs to be 5 by. In my school district (and I think this is a pretty common date) the child needs to have turned 5 by August 1st. A 4 year old cannot start kindergarten here, and I’m almost certain that is the rule everywhere. So she’s definately going to have to wait for another year, but that’s definately a benefit for her. She’ll be in preschool for an extra year, and she’ll probably have a bit of an advantage over some of the other kids because she’s used to that learning environment, and she’ll know all of the things that the preschool will have taught her. My birthday is July 25, so I was close to the cut-off age when I started, and as it turned out, I was the youngest person in my class. It was like that all the way until high school, when a boy started whose birthday was July 29. I’m glad that my son’s birthday is in February, so that he’ll be right in the middle of the rest of his classmates, age-wise.
