What age should treatment start?

The American Orthodontic Association suggests that every child have an orthodontic screening at age seven. At this time jaw relationships have formed and some permanent teeth have erupted. Dr. Dyken can give you an idea of what to expect in the future and if there are any concerns, which should require early treatment.

Most patients though start brace treatment when most or all of their permanent teeth have been shed. This happens typically at around the age of 12, but there is quite a lot of variation amongst individuals. Your usual dentist will keep an eye on the development of your child’s bite, and choose when to refer them, taking into account the length of any waiting lists. This is another good reason to keep up regular check-up appointments with your family dentist. Occasionally treatment is necessary before the eruption of all permanent teeth in order to prevent potential problems, or to avoid the need for – or at least simplify – future treatment. This does not mean that all children need treatment at this age, but it does allow your orthodontist to determine whether your child could benefit from early intervention.

Generally, active treatment commences after all the baby teeth have been lost, meaning most patients start treatment in their early teens. However many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed.

The results are in. My wife and I took our children for their first dental visit when they were about age one and I have always wondered if that was too early despite our dentist reassuring us.

Willa, Well there is no point in going all around the United States to see a doctor. Most doctors have the same machines just some have different names for them. Like I said before find a dermatologist in your area under the resources. Insurance covers most of the treatments anyways. It might become more then one treatment anywhere you go and that can become pretty expencive traveling. The V-Beam pulse dye laser is a new machine and is very effective. There are several beam lasers. You might want to ask the doctor to be sure what name the laser is because there could be a newer one out now. I suggest starting treatment now because I would not want her to go thru what I have been going thru for 21 years of my life. Being made fun of, teased, constent stares, constent questions. It gets tiring so I suggest the sooner removed the better and less of chance her PWS will inpact her life. What state do you live in anyways? I might have heard good things of a doctors in your area you never kno
